Student Scholarships

The California Foundation for Parks and Recreation works with the Scholarship Board to coordinate the efforts of professionals in promoting the education of noteworthy students wishing to enter the field of service throughout the state. The Board annually awards some thirty scholarships to junior, senior and graduate level students majoring in recreation, parks and leisure studies throughout the state of California.

Four Scholarships:
Three - $500 college student scholarships
$500 professional scholarship

College student applicants must attend a college that is located in District I or live/work in a District I city. Applicants must also be a Recreation, Parks, Tourism, or other closely related major.

Professionals must work for an agency located in District I and be a current member of CPRS.

College student applications are released in October due in December.

Professional applications are released in March due in June.

Ray Butler Memorial Scholarship - three scholarships totalling $1,000 available.

Each year our district awards scholarships to deserving students and professionals within the district's boundaries.  The scholarships are presented in honor and memory of Ray Butler, retired professor and former chairman of the San Diego State University 's Recreation Department. 

Scholarships provide financial assistance to students with related educational expenses like tuition and books.  In addition to receiving financial support student scholarships include CPRS Membership and registration for the next years' District XII General Membership Meetings and Workshop Admission.

Must be currently enrolled at a California College or University in a graduate program working towards a master's degree in Gerontology, Recreation/Leisure Services or related human services field with a major emphasis in Gerontology and/or current student research in Gerontology.

All Applicants:

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Work or volunteer experience in Gerontology, Recreation/Leisure Services or a related field
  • Demonstrated need for financial assistance
