Youth Development Leadership Academy
"Youth in the Spotlight"

Hosted by the CPRS Youth Development Committee at the Ontario Convention Center

The Academy returns for its fifth year and is a unique opportunity for youth, youth leaders, youth
commissioners and recreation staff. Youth and recreation staff from public agencies, non-profit organizations and schools are encouraged to participate. The three-day Academy is designed to teach youth how to be involved in their community. The Academy curriculum is based upon the core values from the VIP Action Plan, Creating Community in the 21st Century:

Inclusive-not exclusive, lifelong learning and personal development, respect for diversity of experience, service to the community and fun and celebration.

Registration fee:
$60 - youth 18 years and younger
$100 - Youth Chaperone

This Academy was created in collaboration with California Park & Recreation Society Youth Development Committee; the Cities of Anaheim, Commerce and Duarte; and Leadership Concepts, Inc.

Conducted three days annually in partnership with local youth serving agencies, our Academy goals are to allow your youth to experience the following:

• Young people benefit from attending by learning self-reliance, self-confidence which helps them to become adults who can take their place as responsible members of society
• Young people benefit from attending by developing inner resources and skills needed to cope with daily pressures.

Academy Outcomes:

• Differentiate between inclusive not exclusive
• Identify competencies for personal development and lifelong learning
• State the importance of respecting diversity of experience
• To engage youth through service to the community
• To have fun and celebrate while learning
• Network with other youth staff and youth commissioners
• Demonstrate competencies for teambuilding, introductory icebreakers, and facilitating groups
• Discuss the needs of youth and ways to engage them in activities
• Demonstrates youth and adult partnerships so that attendees can replicate the learning experience in their community.

What You Will Experience

Youth-oriented, youth planned, and youth led educational activities and networking events are offered as part of the Academy experience. Youth participating on the planning committee can volunteer for a minimum of 20 hours or participate in three educational sessions as trainers and one social activity and attend the conference at no charge. Each group coordinator will track the number of volunteer hours achieved and submit a complimentary registration form prior to the Academy so that the attending youth will receive a name badge. Each group coordinator can determine whether the youth volunteers prior to the Academy, during the Academy or a combination of both. Volunteer hours are limited.

Registration & Travel Information:

Meals, transportation, housing and daily parking fees are not a part of the Academy registration fee. Please use the registration form.

Teen Summit

Saturday, March 18, 2006
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
De Anza Community and Teen Center

Participate in a Teen Summit hosted by the City of Ontario and the Coalition of Cities on Teen Programming (Southern California youth programming collaborative). The Summit will be held at the De Anza Community and Teen Center, approximately 20 minutes from the Ontario Convention Center. You must pre-register with the Coalition of Cities prior to attending because of space requirements and food counts. Schedule of events will be ready late February.

Youth Fashion & Talent Show

Youth participating in the Youth Development Leadership Academy will organize and conduct this event open to all conference attendees and their guests.
