  • 1.  D3 Past-Presidents Message and Annual D3 Board Installation and Awards Info

    To the members of CPRS District 3…The BIG 3,

    It has been a tradition that the outgoing President of the District kick off the Awards and Board Installation Luncheon with a speech summing up their year as President, but this hasn't been a normal year and being on ZOOM trying to convey the honor and humility this past year has brought me serving as your President just didn't feel right. I like to be in room face to face, feeling the crowd and coming from the heart so I am breaking tradition this one time and writing a heartfelt letter to BIG 3 thanking each and every one of you for my time this past year's as President.

    When I started my Presidency at last year's Awards and Installation Luncheon I read aloud the famed Teddy Roosevelt Man in the Arena quote, little did I know words I try and live my life by and words meant to inspire would actually be a real world life changing challenge issued for all of us. This past year many of us have stumbled for bit, marred by the dust and sweat and blood of what can only be described as acts of God, but we as a profession found a way to strive valiantly, err often and strive to do the deeds in unprecedented times to reinvent the very profession we dedicate our enthusiasm and great devotions too.

    District 3 found itself in the anthem perfectly illustrated in the logo created by Jonathan Katayanagi, City of Lafayette's Director of Parks, Trails & Recreation, While Apart, We're All In This Together. With a reputation as being one of the most active Districts in CPRS we pivoted and reinvent our award winning educational and networking opportunities, virtually. 20/21 saw District 3 offering 58 different virtual training and networking opportunities, spread across the many program areas we offer with nearly 2000 participants. Some of this year's highlights include:

    • Our popular in person Lunch-n-Learns went virtual with the aptly named Corona Conversations.
    • Establishing a bi-weekly virtual meeting for the Department Directors and General Managers of the agencies in District 3.
    • District 3 President Elect Tamara Whitney and Vice President Nicole Espinoza Roa along with the President Elects and Vice Presidents of District 1 and District 2 pioneering the Region 1 Virtual CARE (Corona Ain't Ruining Everything) Conference. Which by the way had 300 attendees.
    • The reintroduction and official recognition of YTRS Youth and Teen Recreation Services as an official sub- committee of the District 3 Board of Directors.
    • Vice President Nicole Espinoza creating the District 3 YouTube Channel.
    • Partnering with our fellow Region 1 Districts 1 & 2 to offer JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) training.
    • Student Scholarships
    • Cal State East Bay Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism Club Virtual Social

    To the D3 Board of Directors I have had the honor of serving with none of what we accomplished this past year would have been possible without your dedication, ingenuity and innovated thinking. I have served with many of you for several years on the Board and will miss our monthly meetings, pre-event set-ups and post event shenanigans.

    To the BIG 3 to be elected to the Presidential Series by you the members, the first to serve in the Vice President's role and complete the 3 year Presidential Series is one of the most humbling and awesome experiences of my Parks & Recreation career. I hope have I lived up to the faith and trust you bestowed upon me to lead the District.  

    As we head into next year I leave with the words I started with:

    "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

    Thank you District 3, The BIG 3 for the honor of serving as your President.

    Thanks, Matt, for a job well done under very trying circumstances!  You've kept the spirit of D3 alive all year with your board and we are still strong thanks to your efforts.
