D3-Are you ready for the next challenge? HQ is encouraging every member of each district and section to introduce themselves to the community. Ideally, you would share a little about yourself, but a simple "Hi" will count. Let's get this thread going!

My name is Jessica Wallner and I'm the Recreation Superintendent for the Town of Danville. I directly oversee Cultural Arts & Marketing for the Recreation, Arts & Community Services Department. A fun fact about me is that I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and was able to visit the Studio Tour in London last year. I'm currently the President for District 3 and I can't wait to meet everyone at all the trainings the board is currently planning! Looking forward to learning a little more about all of you!

I am your Vice President for District 3, and I am really excited to serve for the next three years!  Find me on LinkdIn, Let's connect!

    Good morning everyone!

My name is Martin Champion and I am currently an Activity Specialist for the City of Fairfield Parks and Recreation department. From my five years working with the City of Fairfield, it allowed me to open my eyes to the world of Recreation and open a lot of doors for me! I changed majors from Mathematics to Recreation and I graduated with my Bachelor's from California State University, East Bay. Being able to take on 18 units of classes and working about 40 hours a week has given me the mindset that I can achieve more, so I plan on continuing my education to pursue a Master's degree and potentially a PhD!

I love to cook, play video games (I still play Guitar Hero), and serving the communities and families around me!

Thank you for taking the time to read my message and I look forward to reading everyone's!

    Hello D3!

I'm Chris Chamberlain, Professor Emeritus, at Cal State University, East Bay. I have been a member of CPRS for over 35 years. I was a program manager for the City of San Ramon Parks and Community services before coming to East Bay to teach in the Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism department in 2007. I have served as Department Chair, Interim Dean and Interim Associate Dean. I retired last August but still teach part-time in the department.

I was honored this last year with being inducted into the CPRS Hall of Fame. A big Thank You to Jim Wheeler, the selection committee, and friends who supported my nomination. A truly humbling experience. I continue to give back as a member of the D3 Board- it's important to me to stay involved. In my spare time, I enjoy woodworking, backpacking and camping in my spare time.

    Hi all!

My name is Alissa Mendoza and I am the City of Walnut Creek's Facility Rentals Specialist in the Arts + Recreation Department. I have been in this role FT for a year, and have yet to have a stressful day at work when working for WC! (*Knock on wood*).

I have been in the hospitality field for 17 years, though this is my first role in the Public Sector.

In my free time--hooray for work-life harmony!-- I enjoy taking my 3 and 5 year olds around the hundreds of East Bay's parks. (We try to visit 1 new park a week... I wonder when we'll run out?)  We're big on visiting the library for routine book swap-outs and story times, we like picking as much fruit as possible at U-Pick farms year round, and enjoy spending as many weeks as my General Leave will allow up at Sea Ranch in the Northern Sonoma Coast.

Though I love Summer because of how busy my department/division gets with Summer Camps and event season (SO MANY FACILITY RENTALS), I am a basic Fall fiend through and through. Give me a chunky knit sweater, a Pumpkin Spiced Latte and Halloween year round, and I'm in my element.

    Cheers,

Hi, I'm Todd Trimble and I'm currently the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Orinda in the Bay Area. I began working full-time in recreation in 1990 with the City of Pleasanton and have spent time with two other agencies (including a long run in Walnut Creek) before joining Orinda in late 2016 – all those years in District 3. I was the D3 President in 1999 and also served as VP of the Supervisors Section as well as a stint on the State Board from 2008-10 (Region 1 Rep). I'm currently the Admin. Section Rep for D3.

My fun fact would be that my now adult daughter "made me" tag along on a number of rather harrowing adventures during her teenage years, including white water rafting, zip lining, biking down a volcano, surfing, bungee jumping, off-road ATV riding, indoor rock climbing, parasailing, and sky diving.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm Dario, I am the City of Concord's Facility Rentals Program Coordinator. I have been with City of Concord for 11 years. I have been in this role for 2 years. Summer is here, which means my team and I will be assisting our outdoor facility rentals (picnic area). As I write this, I just finished a workshop doing Clifton Strengths, and on my Signature Theme Report Results my 1st Top 5 strength are: 1) WOO "Winning Others Over; 2) Communication; 3) Positivity; 4) Includer; and 5) Consistency. These results are perfect since I love doing facility rentals, meeting new people, making sure customers are aware of our facility policies and procedures, and giving customers positive energy when searching small to big venues. Our Venue. Your Vision! My team makes the renter's event a memorable one to remember.

    Hello D3!

I'm so enjoying getting to know so many of you through these intros!!

I'm Stef (with an 'F'), your CPRS Executive Director.  Did you know that I too, came from a parks and recreation background?  I worked in several senior centers throughout Colorado in my early career!  I then spent a couple of years as a caterer and event planner, before landing at the Colorado Park & Recreation Association and now here with you amazing humans.  I'm one fortunate woman!

Fun Fact... one of my very first duties as CPRS Executive Director was to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium!  Note that I have ZERO athletic ability.  Thanks to a lot of practice and a very patient 'coach' in Jill Nunes, I successfully didn't embarrass myself nor CPRS that day.  It wasn't a long toss and may have bounced once, but it was nice and straight. Yes, there is a video but it may cost you to see it (wink, wink).

    Stef hugs to you!

I will tag on to the City of Dublin chain and introduce myself next. :-) My name is Nicki Wanzenried, and I am also a Recreation Coordinator. I oversee Family Programs, including Camps, After-school programs, Preschool, and YAC. This is my 15th year with the City of Dublin. I started part - time working in preschool and was fortunate to move around to many different program areas during my time with the Dublin. My first job in recreation was when I was 17. I was a camp counselor for the City of Concord. I initially went to school to become an elementary school teacher but halfway through my credential program realized my passion was recreation and have been in Rec ever since. This is a great challenge. It has been so fun reading everyone's introductions.

It's so fun to read all about you and your fun facts! I'm Henry Perezalonso, the Recreation, Arts & Community Services Director for the Town of Danville. This June will be my 38th summer in parks and recreation. I started in the '80s (insert old joke here...You know who you are). I had the pleasure of working for the cities of Sunnyvale, Beverly Hills, and Mountain View before making my way to Danville. In between stops, I also had some fun in our world's private and nonprofit sectors.  Fun fact: I have shared a restroom with a US President, had Thanksgiving dinner with someone who played a US President, and have a family member married to a President of another country.

So excited to be a part of this group!

My name is Erin Lucas hailing as current Recreation Manager at USF overseeing student programming and operations. I have a gamut of community programming experience including volunteer manager at a food bank during the pandemic where I had an amazing opportunity to work with national guard, city and state officials.

My love and passion is Aquatics (previous Aquatics Director of Downtown Oakland Y).

Nothing brings a bigger smile to my face than training lifeguards and swim instructors. Hoping to find my way back and serve the community in the public sector.

As a certified Park and Rec Professional, I joined this group for resources and networking.  I realize most of you are currently employed by a City. Please let me know if there are any concerns as I am not.

    Have an amazing day!

You all are an amazing bunch, and I am honored to be working for and with you!

Outside of CPRS I sing, dance, & play Latin percussionist. My husband & I had an Afro-Cuban Drum & Dance Folklore group called, Ebo Okokán  .  .  .  Offerings from the Heart, for about 20 years (1994-2004), performing at public and private events and at the local school (K-12 & Univ), performing mostly in Northern California. I oversee our senior programming including trips, inclusive adult recreation, and health & human services for the 50 & Better Community. Before joining Concord, I worked throughout Region 1 and graduated with a B.S. in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration from Sacramento State.

Fun Fact: I have a growing "fan club" among our senior community who enthusiastically support every program and event that I am a part of. They tend to show up in crowds when I emcee events like a Senior Talent Show and even rush to join me when line dancing on a cruise ship during our Fleet Week trip!

In my free time, you will either find me on top of a mountain, chasing a waterfall, or wandering around somewhere in a forest. Plus, you can occasionally catch me with our trivia team, "Train Rec," barely helping out alongside Angela and the rest of the crew!

    Good Morning D3!

My name is Jun Gandia and I'm the Recreation Supervisor for the City of Antioch overseeing the Nick Rodriguez Community Center, Senior Center and Theatre. I've going on 23 years working in Recreation. I'm originally from SoCal the OC (Orange County). My first rec job was with the City of Costa Mesa in Mobile Rec and spent 9 years there. I loved it so much I get a degree in Recreation at Cal State Long Beach. Go Dirtbags! I met a girl majoring in Rec just like me. We ended up being Rec in Love! So I ended having to go see about a girl in NorCal in a small farm town called Brentwood. Which brings me to today, living the small town life with my wife and two boys. I'm Filipino and my wife's Mexican so we're the Mexipino Familia.

In my free time I enjoy BBQing, watching sports,  and creating great memories through photos/videos of my Mexipino Familia.

I enjoy everything about CPRS and participating in the conferences/trainings. I love always reconnecting with my Rec Fam from SoCal to NorCal and look forward to meeting new people. Cheers everyone to a great Summer!

Hello from HQ! My name is Lindsay, and I am the Administrative Coordinator, and the newest member here at CPRS. I assist with answering the phone, processing payments, registering members for events, and a variety of other tasks. I have had a great time reading your introductions over the last few days!

My coworkers call me "Mini Hoover" because I'm petite but have the appetite of a linebacker (or so I've been told)!

I don't know what I'd do without our parks because I walk my 15-year-old chihuahua and 6-year-old corgi every day!

Fun fact: I did a cartwheel inside the Pentagon when I was in high school!

    Hi D3,

My name is Joy White, and I'm a Recreation Supervisor with the City of Albany. In August, I will have been working with Albany for 3 years, but I have always worked with youth and communities my entire career. As a supervisor, I oversee our Facility Rentals (Community Center, fields, and picnic areas), Adult Sports, and our Customer Service Team, and I support Contract Classes. Photography was a new hobby during the pandemic; I am now trying to incorporate it into my schedule as my "me time." A fun fact about me is that I am a Disney fan and love to attend all the special events.

I look forward to meeting and learning from others.

I'm a past CPRS District 3 President, recently served on the State Board of Directors as the Region 1 Rep, and currently serve on the Admin Section Board as the Director of Education. I love all the connections and educational opportunities that CPRS creates!

My fun fact (for those of you who don't know) is I play competitive paintball and participated in paintball tournaments all over the country for the past 25 years.

Let's keep the San Ramon party going!

Hey Big 3! My name is Jennifer Gault and I'm sure you've enjoyed your nice break hearing from me. I'm your most recent past D3 President and I'm missing serving on the board big time. I am a supervisor with the City of San Ramon overseeing sports and youth programs. I've also worked with teens, preschool, youth centers and our youth commission. I'm a new pickleball enthusiast (I know.. I went to the dark side, I'm sorry) and just got back from an amazing trip to Alaska. Can't wait to see all of the great things D3 has planned this year!

    Hey D3!

My name is Edwin Tse, and I am a Recreation Coordinator for teen and preschool programs in the City of San Ramon. I have been with the City of San Ramon for the past 10 years, and I have over 25 years of experience in the recreation field, including roles at the Boys and Girls Club, UCSF Recreation and Fitness, Ropes Course and the YMCA.

Fun fact: I'm known as the food enthusiast in my department. I love to eat and try out new dishes. If you're looking to try something new and need a sidekick, count me in! I've eaten fried worms, snake, bison tongue, ants, and crickets, to name a few. I'm always looking to add to try something new!

Good Morning D3!! Adding to the San Ramon Party!!

My name is Jody Curley with the City of San Ramon.  I'm a Recreation Coordinator within the Facilities/ Operations Division, overseeing field rentals, gym and pool user permits, and special event logistics. I previously worked in facility & picnic rentals and youth sports for the City of San Ramon. Prior to working in San Ramon, I worked for the City of San Leandro for the San Leandro Recreation and Human Services Department. I was born and raised in the Bay Area and have worked here for 19 years!

I originally went to school to become either a Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer, but loved my experience of working with the community and sports leading me to my Recreation career.

If I'm not at work, you can probably find me at a sports game (Warriors, Niners, Sharks and baseball), Disneyland, Maui or traveling somewhere 😊

The Big 3 with other District Past Presidents jumping on its my turn. My name is Matthew Galindo and I was the District's first Vice President, first to complete the 3 year Presidential Series (Vice President, President Elect and President) and served as the District's President during COVID. Currently I am a Recreation Program Manager with the City of Concord's Recreation Servies Department with Aquatics, Youth Programs and Facility Rentals in my area. Fun fact working with the waterfront staff of our residential camp, Camp Concord in South Lake Tahoe I have trained and certified Lifeguards from all over the world (I have tried Vegemite from the Aussie's and it is god awful).

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Steve Voorhies and I currently serve as the Director of Recreation Services for the City of Concord (where I grew up, learned to swim, got my first paycheck from the golf course driving range, volunteered, and have been working ever since, for better or worse – I never left). My first involvement with CPRS was on the D4 board while attending San Francisco State, I've served on a range of CPRS committees and initiatives but feel most strongly about the simply awesome professional network that we all have – and this is a creative way to activate it!

Fun fact, the City of Concord is fortunate to have a summer camp at Lake Tahoe called Camp Concord, the Camp Director who hired me to work there in 1989 suggested I look into the recreation degree and career path, the rest is history, I can fill you in on the story when our paths cross.

I had to jump in after a fellow SF State gator! I am Elizabeth Sheets Orcutt, the Community Relations Manager for the City of Walnut Creek's Arts + Rec department. Last week, I celebrated my first anniversary with the City and have been having a blast! With a unique background in dance, health, hospitality, operations, and nonprofit communications, it's been a joy to combine my experiences in this public-facing role over the past year. Our incredible staff has been so supportive, and I'm in awe of them daily.

I rent a great duplex in Walnut Creek with my spouse and our dog (the dog doesn't pay rent, though), and I feel fortunate to serve the community where I live and explore! I'm an avid quilter, a mediocre violinist, and a big proponent of physical movement for mental health.

Hi everyone! I am trying to write in before the June Challenge ends! :) My name is Vannessa Cendejas and I also work for the City of Walnut Creek (shoutout to Elizabeth and Jim who have written already)! I have been here for over 8 years now supporting our adult 50+ programs, community arts (18+), transportation program, summer camp, special events, adult 50+ travel and all age ranges for folks who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. I have worn many hats over the years while being here--happy to say that there has never been a dull moment in my career. I appreciate my colleagues and how much passion they have for our community.  Prior to joining the Walnut Creek team, I received my Masters of Social Work from the University of Southern California (USC) and my B.A. degree from UC Berkeley. I really enjoy learning and teaching and hope to earn my doctorate someday and teach at a university level.

Fun fact: I created the Trunk or Treat event for our community back in 2019, where I had ask our team of 6 to support the "200" people who RSVP'd for our event, but we ended up with 2,000 people (lots of learning curves back then). :) Five years later, the Arts and Recreation team has all hands on deck for this event that now hosts over 8,000 members of our community for the last few years.

    Hi Fellow Recreators,

As an introvert/extrovert, I typically pass on these opportunities but I've been inspired and I Have been enjoyIng the engagement- reading from professionals I've never met, or learning more from fellow reckies I know.

My name is Julian and community has been a part of my life forever. Whether that looks like families on a cul-de-sac hosting the best fourth of July parties in GilrOy, Ca., leading trail cRews with the StudEnt Conservation Association, or building a communitY at the Red Morton Youth Center in Redwood City. Now, I am a coordinator with the City of Pleasanton with the largest focus on youth programs.

Fun facts: I'm named after my great grandfather; my grandpa was 1 of 16 siblings (all the same parents) as they were mighty field workers; I've accidentally stepped on a beehive and paid for it; I've been stung by a sting-ray; and sky-dived (sky-dove?).

Thank you everyone for pushing through the challenges we each face to continue to build community. And thank you for sharing a bit about yourself.

    Sincerely,

    Julian Mireles

    Hello Everyone,

I'm RJ Natal, a program manager for the City of Concord Recreation Services department, and I have over 25 years of experience in the recreation field. You can find me at the Willow Pass Community Center, where I work with a dynamic team to provide optimal programming and services for the Concord community. A new highlight in my job responsibilities has been the oversight of Camp Concord, "The happiest place on dirt," in South Lake Tahoe. What a Gem!

I've served on the D3 board since 2016 as the YTRS Chair, Director of Programs, and now serving as Recreation Section Representative. I also sit on the Recreation Section Board as the Region 1 representative.

In my free time, I enjoy coaching, travel, fastpitch, softball, and soccer for my two daughters throughout the year. I'm also a big fan of visiting the other happiest place on earth.
