    Hi D3!

If you are based in Contra Costa, have any of you or your event hosts had to get a CCC Temporary food permit for trick or treating events? There is no food, just prepackaged candy.

    Thanks!

No since they are not being sold and are prepacked.

Hi Amanda! I know you already talked with our Events Coordinator, but wanted to reply in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.

We have been told by the CCC Health Department that yes, booths giving out ANY type of consumable good need to be a part of the health permit. We found this out during an event were a few craft vendors were handing out candy and the health inspector came to us and said they needed to put it away and could not hand it out, even if they weren't selling it. They have even said no bottled water can be handing out when we have called to ask.

    Hello D3

I reached out to one of my contacts at CC Health.  The response from the Director of Environmental Health is below:

No, EH does not require businesses to apply for temp event permits to distribute prepackaged candy at Halloween events.  What tends to happen with these events is the event starts with just prepackaged candy distribution but quickly morphs into additional popcorn and hot chocolate sales/distribution.

In general, a temp event permit becomes required as soon as food booths with open food preparation (e.g., hot chocolate, popcorn/kettle corn, cotton candy, etc.) requiring some form of handwashing by the employee(s) preparing the food item(s) for sale/distribution are present.

    Happy Halloween!
