Dear Aquatics Professional,
In the spring the California Park & Recreation Society (CPRS) Aquatic Section approved a Task Force to research, explore, and discuss the impacts of the CA Code of Regulations: Title 22. Division 9. First Aid & CPR Standards and Training for Public Safety Personnel on public agencies and public pool Lifeguards. The code requires all public Lifeguards to fulfill training requirements with additional advanced first aid and CPR skills. While most public agencies comply with this training requirement, it is facilitated in many different ways with no uniformity in our profession. In addition, the training is an advanced level course that includes Lifeguards, Firefighters, and Police officers within the public safety personnel profession.
The Task Force has been discussing the impacts of this training on public agencies and has developed a short survey to help collect data for how agencies are handling this requirement. We ask that only one representative from the agency complete the survey to ensure accuracy. The data will help the Task Force with future discussions and determine what actions can be taken to help aquatic professionals ensure Lifeguards are trained and prepared.
Please complete the survey before Friday, September 29 as it will close at 8:00pm that evening. We want as many public agencies to complete the survey so we have a broad spectrum of data to review. The Task Force will be communicating with the CPRS Aquatic Section Board of Directors regarding all information received and we will continue to provide our aquatic colleagues with updates.
Thank you for your assistance and time!
Sincerely,
Tom Hellmann, CPRP
