  • 1.  Ceremonial Open Flame - Indoors

    Posted 03-17-2025 02:33 PM

    Hey all,

In terms of facility rentals, how are other agencies accommodating or denying events (usually weddings) that request an open flame indoors?

    Thank you!

    Hi Travis,

In Walnut Creek, we permit a single open flame for ceremonial purposes only--very specifically for a birthday candle that will be lit and blown out, and specifically for weddings for a unity candle ceremony that will be lit and then put out immediately afterward.

For certain cultural wedding ceremonies that request a fire pit as a cultural ceremony element, we are unable to accommodate this in our spaces due to the proximity of our patio spaces to each rental facility--it's too risky.

We cannot accommodate requests to use live flame candles as a part of reception décor. I recommend all groups that want this "look" opt for LED candles. They make ones that flicker and give the 'lit candle' feel--both pillars and tea lights.

We do not permit any type of firework or sparkler in or outside our facilities, as these are not permitted in Contra Costa County.

We do not permit cold-touch sparkler boxes in our outside our facilities, either. (Even though they're really cool!)

If you'd like to talk through verbiage to share with renters, or how to have this conversation when someone is in your face saying "I need open flames or my wedding will be ruined!"--feel free to call me. (I have this conversation with people at least twice a week.)

    Hope this helps!
