    Hello D6!

    Last month, CPRS launched monthly CPRS District and Section Challenges. For June, the challenge is to introduce ourselves. Whether you want to share a bit about yourself or simply say "Hi," all introductions will count towards the challenge.

    I meet the most handsome Spanish man in Vietnam, 14 years ago he was brave enough to move with me to Santa Cruz. We now have 2 kids and a wild life.

    I have been super busy all Summer, sorry if this is too late.
    Hi my name is Bernt Barbera. I've worked with Parks and Rec for 13 years. In the last year and a half I got hit by a car, rehabilitated intense injuries, got 7 tattoos, broke up with my girlfriend of 9 years, quit nicotine, and got promoted to Recreation Coordinator for the Youth/Teens division of the City of Santa Cruz. Things are starting to calm down for me and I'm loving my new job.

    I work for the City of Watsonville and am the Recreation Coordinator overseeing the Watsonville Youth Center. Fun fact: six months ago, I started a new career with the city of Watsonville's Parks and Community Services after 30 years of working with at risk youth and families in the non-profit sector.

    Hi D6!

    My name is Nick Calubaquib. I am the Parks and Community Services Director for the City of Watsonville. Over the past 25+ years, I have also served the Cites of Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz and Morgan Hill. I have had the honor of serving as D6 President, the Region 2 Rep on the CPRS State Board of Directors and am currently the CPRS Administrators Section President. Fun fact: Last year I did a 200-mile bike ride with two other Directors from Santa Cruz County to raise funds for local youth programs. Later this year, another Director and I are signed up to swim from Alcatraz back to San Francisco. Living the parks and rec dream!

    Hey D6, 

    I am Dan Meewis the Recreation Director for the City of Seaside, where I have been since 2015. I have been in the field since 1998, and in that time I have been with the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, City of Eureka, McKinlyville Community Services District, and the Town of Discovery Bay. I am also a past D6 president, and I am currently the Admin Section secretary. My fun fact is I am huge Metal Head, I have seen hundreds of shows where you will find me in the Mosh Pit. I have met numerous artists, and I have collection of dozens of Guitar Picks, Drum Sticks, and other items that I have caught from bands during shows.

    My name is Andy Lipsig. I am one of the Recreation Coordinators for the City of Pacific Grove. I have been working with kids since 1988. I have worked for agencies such as the YMCA, U.S. Army MWR and now the City of Pacific Grove Recreation Department. I lived most of my life in Southern California, but I am a die hard Chicago Sports fan since I was born there. Happy to meet all of you.

    Hi D6,

     

    I'm Andrea Wasson, Recreation Manager from the City of King in South Monterey County.  I was on the D6 Board for a term or so and up until two weeks ago, I was the only staff member for my department besides seasonal aquatics and camp staff.  I now have a part-time permanent staff person to help with events, finally!  Fun fact is that I love to travel and hike in our National Parks and I am planning a Southwest road trip next month on Route 66.

    I just realized that I’m not a past (or present) president of anything!!! I better get to work! Lol lol…

    I’m Eric Sturm, a retired California State Parks and Santa Cruz County Parks professional. I still work for the county and volunteer for the state (I know - I’m a retirement failure!!). Having put four decades into parks, why stop now??

    Fun fact: I once found $650k cash in unmarked bills stuck in a sand dune and turned it all in (I know, I know…!!) Seems it was personal family money of a hostage/ransom incident gone wrong, and the FBI (who lost the $) was very happy to see me!! Could you imagine- an entry level ranger-1 driving around town in a shiny new Lamborghini; nothing suspicious about that!!

    A fun fact about me is that I have been involved with Recreation since I was 6 years old, including my first job when I was 15, however I didn't realize I wanted to do it for a career until I was almost a senior in high school!

    I really enjoy reading these introductions! 

    My name is Karen Larson and I am the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Monterey. I have been with the City since 1986 and I have been the Director since 2019. Long ago, I was the District VI Secretary (back in the 90s). Fun fact about me is that I have been to Europe 5 times and I hope to go back in 2025 to walk the Camino de Santiago.
