Why have you chosen to run for the CPRS State Board of Directors?

I have chosen to run for Vice President of CPRS because of my deep passion for this profession and the incredible individuals I have encountered throughout my journey. This field has not only been my career but also a significant part of my personal growth, shaping who I am today. I have had the privilege of serving two impactful years on the State Board as a Section Rep, which broadened my understanding of CPRS’s vital role. During this time, I also volunteered to lead the JEDI Task Force, which has since grown into the JEDI Counsel. This role pushed me to deepen my commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, helping me to uncover my "why"—my mission and purpose. The experience has been profoundly fulfilling, and it reinforced my dedication to creating meaningful change.

After opting not to run for reelection for my position on the board, my passion for this work drove me to travel across the state, advocating for the importance of cultivating a culture of belonging. I’ve sought ways to empower and support members on their JEDI journeys, highlighting that true progress comes from collective efforts and shared commitment. Now, as the JEDI Counsel continues to evolve, I see this as the perfect moment to enter the race for this incredible leadership opportunity.

I am excited by the prospect of bringing my experience, vision, and heartfelt connection to CPRS to the forefront. I thrive on connecting with people, building bridges, and fostering a supportive environment for our members, current leaders, and future trailblazers. I am committed to helping professionals discover their "why," their mission, and their purpose through the transformative power of recreation and engagement as a CPRS member. With this platform, I aim to uplift and inspire, ensuring that everyone in this community feels seen, heard, and valued. I would be honored to bring my dedication and experience to this role and continue supporting the incredible work we all do.

What personal attributes, skills, or knowledge would you bring to the State Board of Directors if elected?

With over 18 years of experience in the recreation field, I have had the opportunity to serve communities in both Southern and Northern California. My expertise spans seniors, teens, afterschool programs, summer day camps, special events, youth and adult sports, and of course many, many other duties as assigned.

Currently, I am the Recreation Manager for the City of Rohnert Park managing one of the best teams around. I also have the honor of serving as Co-Chair for the California Park and Recreation Society's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Counsel. I am passionate about my work, continuously seeking opportunities to learn and grow in order to better serve my community through impactful parks and recreation programs.

I believe I have great communication skills which enable me to connect with people on a deep level, fostering meaningful relationships. I bring creativity and innovation to both operations and programming, which has led to the successful launch of unique events such as the 2020 Virtual School of Rec Conference and the 2024 JEDI Academy. Beyond my professional achievements, I can make a great cocktail (and mocktail), if you travel with me, I can craft a pretty great itinerary, and, as a self-proclaimed foodie, I am known for being able to find the best food spots! Food is a great unifier!

Most importantly, I am deeply passionate about recreation and am committed to fostering growth and success in others. One of my greatest joys is encouraging and witnessing someone present for the first time at a CPRS event. I believe strongly in the power of belonging, which fuels my leadership style and distinguishes me as a leader.

What is the greatest challenge our profession faces and how will you lead to address that challenge?

While it may not be the most pressing challenge in our field, the issue of advancing within the profession without the certain educational credentials is becoming increasingly significant. Over the last two years, I've spoken with numerous professionals who are eager to advance but find themselves held back by the educational requirements listed in job postings.

This presents a unique opportunity for CPRS to lead discussions on the importance, necessity, and/or value of higher education in the recreation profession. There has been some awesome research and discussion led this year by Dr. Brandon Taylor on the subject. I would love to help continue finding creative ways to facilitate conversations among hiring managers and new/experienced professionals, exploring pathways for career advancement both with and without a degree. This idea would fall within the CARD framework aligning with State Board's commitment to Advancement.
